Shakib Al Hasan Makes History with 14,000 Runs and 600 Wickets in International Cricket

On July 11, 2023, during the Bangladesh vs Afghanistan One Day International in Chattogram, Shakib Al Hasan achieved a remarkable milestone in international cricket. In the 14.2nd over, bowled by Afghan pacer Abdul Rahman, Shakib Al Hasan attempted a strong squat cut to a short-of-a-length delivery outside the off stump. Although the shot wasn’t fully under his control, the ball managed to evade Afghanistan wicket-keeper Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s dive and trickled over the boundary for a four. With those four runs, Shakib Al Hasan etched his name in history by becoming the first player to join the prestigious “double club” of 14,000 runs and 600 wickets in international cricket.

Prior to this incredible achievement, Shakib Al Hasan had already set records in the cricketing world. In 2021, during the second ODI against Zimbabwe in Harare, he entered the 12,000 runs club in international cricket. At that time, his wicket tally stood at 583. Later that year, during the T20 World Cup’s first round against Scotland, Shakib reached the milestone of 600 wickets, thereby completing the “double” of 12,000 runs and 600 wickets.

While there are two other “double clubs” consisting of 12,000 runs and 600 wickets, as well as 13,000 runs and 600 wickets, Shakib Al Hasan remains the sole all-rounder to possess these extraordinary records. Among all-rounders, the closest challenger to his run tally across all formats is South Africa’s legendary cricketer Jacques Kallis, who scored 25,534 runs and took a total of 577 wickets in international cricket.

Before Shakib’s record-breaking feat, only Jacques Kallis, Shahid Afridi from Pakistan, and Shakib himself were part of the elite “double club” with a minimum of 500 wickets and 11,000 runs. However, since surpassing Kallis’ 577-wicket mark against Zimbabwe on July 16, 2021, Shakib has remained unmatched. He now stands alone in the “double club” with at least 12,000 runs and 600 wickets. With his latest accomplishment of 14,000 runs and 600 wickets, Shakib continues to solidify his position as one of cricket’s greatest all-rounders in history.
